Zaha Hadid 1950 – 2016
Ik heb Zaha Hadid nooit gekend of ontmoet, en toch kwam het nieuws van haar dood als een schok aan. Uren heb ik vol bewondering staan kijken tijdens het bouwen van het nieuwe Havenhuis in Antwerpen. In weer en wind en op alle mogelijke tijdstippen van de dag heb ik geprobeerd om een zo mooi mogelijke foto van dit prachtige ontwerp te maken. De hoofdredacteur van mondo*arc, een vakblad voor architecten zei dit over haar: “In my opinion there is not another architect who did more to promote creative lighting design, both in terms of her encouragement of lighting design as a profession and as a result of her flowing architecture”. Ze heeft helaas het eindproduct nooit kunnen zien.
Zaha Hadid Architects baseerde hun beslissing om een structuur boven op het gebouw te zetten op “research into the historic firehouse—a 100-year-old replica of a Hanseatic residence—that revealed unrealized plans for a central spire. The new structure, completes “the verticality of the original design’s unrealized tower” and also respects each of its four original exteriors by leaving them uncovered by a neighboring building. The extension, meanwhile, boasts a glazed-glass façade that “ripples like waves and reflects the changing tones and colors of the sky” and a faceted asymmetrical design that nods to the city’s reputation as the diamond capital of the world. Pointing out toward the Schelde river, the building is a testament to the city’s longtime standing as one of Europe’s largest ports, as well as a reminder of its forward-looking plans for expansion over future generations ».
